A. Before you start, please note::
- The Search and List Kit is suitable for MS Windows 2000 XP
and 95/98/ME users. It is not yet suitable for users of MS Vista,
Apple Mac, Linux, etc.
- For MS users (other than Vista): Print these instructions before
downloading the Search and List Kit, then follow them step by step.

B. Installing your FIRST Search and List Kit
- Create a new folder on the C drive and give it the name Astute.
(You can use Windows Explorer to do this.)
- Continue as under D. (Windows 2000/XP users) or E. (Windows
95/98/ME users).
- Please Note: The Search and List Kit is not yet suitable for
users of MS Vista, Apple Mac, Linux, etc.

C. Installing a REPLACEMENT (Updated) Search and List Kit
- If you follow the instructions in D. or E. below, you will be asked (for
each file) if you wish the new file to overwrite the existing file.
Answer y for yes. (If you do not wish to read and respond to these
"Overwrite Prompts", delete all previously installed files from the
folder in which the Search Kit was installed, here assumed to be
C:\Astute.)
- Continue as under D. (Windows 2000/XP users) or E. (Windows
95/98/ME users).
- Please Note: The Search and List Kit is not yet suitable for
users of MS Vista, Apple Mac, Linux, etc.

D. INSTALLING the Search and List Kit - Windows 2000/XP only
- Windows 2000/XP users should click the following link to download
the Search Kit file (2.7 MB) SK2k.exe. When
asked by your browser, save to disk. When asked, instruct your
browser to save the file to C:\Astute.
- Using Windows Explorer, double left click on the SK2k.exe file in
C:\Astute. Press Run, Install.
- Wait a few moments until the files have been extracted. If you are
warned that file(s) exist, click "Yes to all" to allow overwriting of
them if they already exist.
- The Search Kit will be installed (or reinstalled with an updated
Largfile) in C:\Astute
- An icon labelled 'Index Search & List'
is available for you to drag to the desktop.
When you have placed it on your desktop the installation
is complete, ready for use.
- This provides six files including (1) LARGFILE.HTM (14MB) (2) LIST.COM
which is the search and list program, (3) ALLW2K.BAT which starts the
search, (4) A file for the Desktop icon which is called Index Search
and List.lnk, (5) a readme.txt file and (6) ST32.ICO an icon
file

E. INSTALLING the Search and List Kit - Windows 95/98/ME only
- Windows 95/98/ME users should click the following link to download
the Search Kit file (2.0 MB) SearchKt.exe.
When asked by your browser, save to disk. When asked, instruct your
browser to save the file in C:\Astute.
- Using Windows Explorer, double left click on the SearchKt.exe file
appearing in C:\Astute
- Wait a few moments until the files have been extracted.
If you are warned that file(s) exist, clik "Yes to all" to allow
overwriting of them if they already exist.
- The Search Kit will be installed (or reinstalled with an updated
Largfile) in C:\Astute
- An icon labelled 'Index Search & List'
is available for you to drag to the desktop.
When you have placed it on your desktop the installation
is complete, ready for use.
- This provides ten or eleven files, including (1) Largfile.htm (2)
List.com which is the search and list program, (3) All.bat which
starts the search, (4) A file for the Desktop icon which is called
Index Search & List, (5) a Readme.txt file, and (6)various
files dealing with colours, icon, etc.

F. To USE the SEARCH AND LIST Facility
(This facility must first be installed. See Installation Instructions
above.)
- To SEARCH AND LIST the All Plain Indices file (Largfile),
double-click the 'Index Search & List' icon.
- As instructed, key in the letter s followed by a space and then the
word(s), phrase or name(s) you wish to search for, press Enter and
wait a few seconds (1-10). The list which appears will show all
entries containing the phrase, etc. which you entered. The total
number of lines appears at top.
- To WRAP the ends of lines which are outside the screen so each
appears on the next line, press the letter W. To unwrap, press W
again.
- To PRINT the list shown (wrapped or unwrapped), press Ctrl+P.
This program is optimised to print on LPT printers. If it fails
to print, press Ctrl+F (form feed). However, if the computer freezes,
press Ctrl+Alt+Del to end the task; then use SAVE to file:
- To SAVE the list shown, press Alt+M to mark the top line,
scroll down as necessary to reveal the base of the listing,
then press Alt+B to mark to the bottom line of that, then
press Alt+D to copy the list to file.
It is necessary to specify the full filename in the format
c:\foldername\filename.txt (or .htm). Press Enter.
Then using Windows Explorer: navigate to the folder and find
the file. Double click on the filename to display the file.
Then print, copy/paste, etc. as required.
- To search and list with ANOTHER word, phrase or name, press Esc,
then see 2. above.
- To EXIT from the Search and List program, press Esc, then type the
word exit, and press Enter.

G. NOTES about the Union Index SEARCH AND LIST Kit:
- When installed, the Search and List Kit will allow a rapid search
(in case insensitive mode) of a combined file of over 135 PLAIN
indices, containing 164,000 entries, to find all
articles/authors with a given word, phrase or name, and to list and
print these entries.
- Diacritics have been removed from these files.
- This facility has been found very useful in The Campbell
Theosophical Research Library and by others.
