1. This web page contains one file for each of the periodical indices shown in Full List. One can download, search, view, save, print and edit each index separately. These files are in HTML, and all have .htm extensions.
2. Most of the indices are in our standard format and they are referred to as PLAIN indices. The exceptions are either in Outline or Special format and they are listed under Subsets: Outline and Special Indices (not Plain)
3. Each PLAIN index entry has a sequence of fields. These fields are indicated by capital letters at the top of the index. Some of the fields are also indicated by a lower case letter in front of the relevant entry. The letters may include: J=journal abbreviation (see Abbreviations ), Y=year, V=volume, I=issue, M=month (+ after the month indicates supplement), P=page, T=title, A=author.
4. There are over 135 PLAIN indices (i.e. indices to 135 periodicals) containing 163,000 entries.
5. This web page also contains a SEARCH AND LIST KIT which, when installed, will allow a rapid search of ALL PLAIN indices (in case insensitive mode) to find all entries with a given word, phrase or name, and to list and print these entries. Diacritics have been removed from these files. This facility has been found very useful in The Campbell Theosophical Research Library.
6. TO DOWNLOAD THE SEARCH AND LIST KIT: Go to Download Search and List Kit

7. To use the Search and List Facility

1. To SEARCH AND LIST the All Plain Indices file (Largfile), double-click the 'Index Search and List' icon. As instructed, key in the letter s followed by a space and then the word, phrase or name you wish to search for, press Enter and wait a few seconds (1-10). The list which appears will show all articles containing the phrase, etc. which you entered. The total number of lines appears at top.
2. To WRAP the ends of lines which are outside the screen so that the excess appears on the next line, press the letter w. To unwrap, press w again.
3. To PRINT the list shown (wrapped or unwrapped), press Ctrl-P. This program is optimised to print on LPT printers.
4. To search and list with another word, phrase or name, press Esc, then see 1. above.
5. To EXIT from the program, press Esc, type the word exit, press Enter.

9. To submit contributions and obtain updates

The Union Index Files are updated on a regular basis with three types of material:
1. indices to additional issues of periodicals already indexed
2. indices to previously unindexed periodicals
3. corrections to indices
The Campbell Theosophical Research Library welcomes contributions.

Except for small quantities, material for updating should be in the format of the existing index files and should be presented in electronic form, either on diskette or as an appendix (not Attachment) to an email, sent to the Library Coordinator.

Some suggestions for Contributors

Whether the material is sent as an email or on a diskette, the distinct fields (Periodical name, year, vol, month, page, title, author) must be delimited. Tabs (tabular stops) are a good delimiter. Any character that is not used in the text is ok.

(If you have material but cannot provide it in this form, please inform the Library Coordinator. Please do not send files in any proprietary formats (such as RTF, Excel, WP, Word, Office, Q&A.) There are three acceptable non-proprietary formats: Text, dbf, HTML.

1. HTML is superior to Text and dbf formats when there are diacritics (umlaut, acute, grave, circumflex, macron, etc) in the material. It has no other superiority and one slight disadvantage as some email software is unable to pass it along without making changes! Large quantities of HTML tagged material are best transferred on a diskette.
2. The dbf format is unsuitable when there are diacritics to be sent. Otherwise, it is best sent on diskette.
3. The Text format is unsuitable when there are diacritics to be sent. Otherwise, it has no disadvantages. Send via email or diskette.
4. All proprietary formats (that we have tested) are unsuitable:
   1. in their handling of diacritics
   2. in necessitating the possession of matching proprietary software (here in Sydney) to receive the material.
