| The
Theosophical Society is an international organisation
established in New York City on November 17, 1875. Its
principal founders were Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, Henry
Steel Olcott and William Quan Judge. In 1882 the
International Headquarters were established at Adyar,
Madras, India. Today branches exist in more than 60
countries.
The Theosophical Society is a non sectarian body of
seekers of Truth, promoting the ideal of human solidarity
and striving to serve humanity. Its three declared
Objects are:
-
First - To form a nucleus of the
Universal Brotherhood of Humanity, without distinction of
race, creed, sex, caste, or colour.
-
Second - To encourage the study of
Comparative Religion, Philosophy and Science.
-
Third - To investigate unexplained laws
of Nature and the powers latent in the human being.
The Society is composed of men and woman who united by
their approval of the above Objects and by their
determination to promote brotherhood and to remove
religious, racial, and other antagonisms. Their bond of
union is a common search and aspiration for Truth. They
hold that truth should be sought by study, by reflection,
by service , and not imposed by authority as a dogma.
They consider that belief should be the result of
individual study, experience, and insight rather than
mere acceptance of traditional ideas, and that should
rest on knowledge, not on assertion. They see every
religion as an expression of the Divine Wisdom, and
prefer its study to its condemnation, its practice to
proselytism. Peace is their watchword, as Truth is their
aim.
Theosophy offers a philosophy which renders life
intelligible and demonstrates the inviolable nature of
the laws which govern its evolution. It puts death in its
rightful place as a recurring incident in an endless
life. Opening the gateway to a fuller and more radiant
existence. It restores to the world the Science of the
Spirit, teaching us to know the Spirit as our true self
and the mind and body as our servants. It illumines the
Scriptures and doctrines of religions by unveiling their
hidden meanings, thus justifying them at the bar of
intelligences as, in their original purity, they are
never justified in the eyes of intuition.
The Theosophical Society, in an official statement of
policy, guarantees the right of individual freedom of
thought for every member. No One, in joining the Society,
is required to surrender the teachings and beliefs of
their own faith. No doctrine, no opinion by whomsoever
taught or held, is in any way binding on any member, and
no teacher or writer has authority to impose his or her
opinions upon others. Every member is urged to defend and
act upon these fundamental principles, and to fearlessly
exercise their own right of liberty of thought and
expression, within the limits of courtesy and
consideration for others.
The Theosophical Society, in another statement of
official policy, seeks to maintain its own integrity by
remaining free of identification with any other
organisation. While cooperating with all those whose aims
and activities make such cooperation possible, the
Society is committed only to its own work Objects and is
intent on developing its own work on the broadest and
most inclusive lines .
The Theosophical Society claims no monopoly of Theosophy,
as the Divine Wisdom cannot be limited, but its Fellows
seek to understand it in ever -increasing measure. All in
sympathy with the Objects of The Theosophical Society are
welcomed as members.
The Theosophical Society is an international organisation
dedicated to the promotion of brotherhood and to the
encouragement of the study of religion, philosophy and
science, so we may better understand ourselves and our
place in the universe.
The Theosophical Society has no dogma and stands for
complete freedom of individual search and belief.
Therefore, the ideas expressed in its publications are
not in the nature of official statement. They are offered
to stimulate thought and encourage study and enquiry.
