The Purpose of ConventionIn the Rules of The Theosophical Society in Australia, the word Convention means the Convention Business Meeting, the lectures that follow are an optional extra, as it were. Three of the functions and powers of that meeting are as follows:
I sincerely hope that all those registered for Convention this year will take the opportunity to further each of these aims, so that we can, indeed, find new ways of implementing the Society’s Objects and new ways of showing the world that Theosophy exists. This enterprise depends, to a considerable degree, on our understanding of Theosophy and our living it. It also depends to some extent on creating an atmosphere of welcome and of enquiry in our Lodges/Branches and Groups. Our first Object is to create a nucleus of the universal Brotherhood of humanity. It is perhaps useful to keep in mind however, that this does not imply that the members of the Society constitute a special or distinct “brotherhood” by virtue of their membership, in which case the members would be regarded as “brothers” and other people, presumably, would not. Instead, the TS is a nucleus (and not the only nucleus), of a Brotherhood that embraces every human being, and arguably every living being. How potent that nucleus is probably depends on how closely the members of the Society are attuned to Theosophy. Events such as the present convention have much to offer in this regard. Dara Tatray |
